I was used to writing broad topics, throughout my academic writing career. That way, I would have a lot to write about and elaborate on. However, I learned how to write in a different style after taking this course. Throughout this semester, I was forced to narrow down my topics and focus on particular subjects. At first, it was difficult to elaborate on specific subjects. However, I was able to soon get used it by continuously practicing via creating hyperessays and ethonographies. Since I was adopting a new writing style, it was difficult for me in the beginning. Therefore, the first hyperessay was the assignment that I had struggled with the most.
When I had to create my first hyperessay, I was not sure where to start with. In the beginning, I was very tempted to start out broadly and narrow it down. Fighting this urge was the biggest challenge for me. I also had a hard time mapping out and organizing my thoughts. After taking this course, however, I was provided with various tools of organizing my thoughts such as creating mind maps, discussing with others, etc.
Furthermore, I was able to grow as a person. In my previous English classes, our assignments were all graded and critiqued by our professors. However, throughout the semester, we had the opportunity to critique our colleagues. Due to this opportunity, I was able to improve my writing. I not only learned how to write but also express my thoughts efficiently.
Overall, I genuinely appreciated the opportunity to write about topics that I would not normally have considered writing about. This course really broadened my view and enhanced my writing style.
